The reasons people deliberately light fires are many and varied but a few reasons can be:
- Spite and/or revenge.
- General vandalism or mischief.
- Concealing a crime.
- To gain attention and praise for discovering and extinguishing a fire.
- Insurance fraud.
- Excitement (pyromania).
