Community Notice: Banksia Road Organics Processing Facility Closure

Published on Wednesday, 9 April 2025 at 1:00:00 PM

Bunbury Harvey Regional Council (BHRC) has advised that the Banksia Road Organics Processing Facility will remain closed to FOGO for the foreseeable future.

The Facility, which is managed by BHRC, services seven local governments in the South-West, including the Shire of Donnybrook Balingup.

In December 2024, the Shire and partner local governments were informed FOGO (Food Organics Garden Organics) would be diverted to landfill due to high contamination levels in residential and commercial kerbside collections. Unfortunately, contamination has continued to exceed acceptable levels. BHRC is working with the Department of Water & Environmental Regulation (DWER) and partner local governments to address the issue.

In the meantime, we are asking and needing our community members to continue to sort their bins correctly. While this may seem unnecessary, maintaining positive waste habits is crucial to the success of local waste management facilities and meeting resource recovery and sustainability goals. It is the responsibly of our entire community, including BHRC and local governments, to ensure responsible waste management and a clean and safe environment for future generations.

BHRC and its partner local governments recognise the crucial role FOGO plays in the WA Government’s Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030. All are committed to restoring normal operations at the Banksia Road Organics Processing Facility as swiftly as possible, ensuring a sustainable and greener future for our community.

We encourage everyone to refer to DWER’s resources around reducing contamination in FOGO via the WasteSorted website:

Go FOGO & Reduce Waste

Be a GREAT Sort: Earth-Cycle

Community members are assured that kerbside waste collection and operations at the Donnybrook Waste Management Facility and Balingup Waste Transfer Station will continue as normal. Additionally, Council is working with its current waste collection contractor and neighbouring Shires to develop and assess alternative FOGO solutions. Once Council has further information, we will provide an update.
